The Story | A commissioner told Sheriff David
Walker that, “I’d like to see some
real accounting - I want to see exactly what it’s costing
us” regarding the Sheriff's desire to hire more jailers to supervise
out-of-county inmates. The county is paid $40 per inmate per day
to house inmates from other counties.
County Treasurer Katherine Canova estimated employee costs per jailer
is about $3,500 per month, counting benefits. |

The Spin | An inmate brings in $1,200 a month ($40 a day X 30 days). So one jailer (at $3,500 per month) for every 3 out-of-county inmates (3 x $1,200 = $3,600) would put you in the profit zone. But you have to factor in that an inmate needs to be supervised 24 hours and . . . uh . . . screw it . . . call a CPA. |
