For the week ending 5/10/03:

The Story Decatur will have to wait 60 days before beer and wine can be sold in the city.
News worthiness  (on a scale of 0 to 5) **
The Spin In response, Walmart will offer a 60 day layaway plan for a case of Bud Light.

The Story In Runaway Bay, three women – Mary Anne Simpson, Kay Simmons and Cindy Horn Angell – will take seats on the city council after emerging with the most votes in a seven-candidate field for three at-large seats.
News worthiness **
The Spin Cindy's Angells?

The Story The hospital in Decatur with the very long name begins a campaign to have residents write to show their support for a "world class cancer treatment" coming to the hospital.
News worthiness *
The Spin We're confused by this: (1) Who would not want a "world class" anything coming to Decatur whether it be a cancer center, steakhouse, or flower shop. (2) Since the oncology group will come to Decatur if, and only if, it can make a buck by doing so, what does it matter that people call or write to "support" the proposition? We would support Disneyland coming to Wise County, but that ain't happening either.

The Story The Decatur Planning and Zoning commission, by relaxing the city's standards, clears the way for a 400 home development. Some concern was expressed over the possible wrought iron fence that would go around the perimeter. "I'm not sure we want to be able to see into everybody's backyard," said one board member.
News worthiness ***
The Spin Are you kidding? We are always complaining that teenagers don't have anything to do.

The Story New Fairview mayor Steve Misner is accused of, and denies, campaigning within 100 feet of a voting boundary. Misner won the election 89-47.
News worthiness *
The Spin Of course, we are not sure the law would apply if someone is saying, "This is New Fairview! What am I doing? Don't vote for me! Don't vote for me!"
