For the week ending 10/1/05:

The Story Mark Berube continues in his fight to have a rollback election based upon his unhappiness with the way the City of Decatur taxes and spends. Now in the process of collecting 210 signatures for a rollback petition, Berube says "I've had nobody tell me I was wrong and tell me I shouldn't be doing this."
News worthiness (on a scale of 0 to 5) **
The Spin And no one showed up to protest the setting of the tax rate, either.  The lack of opinion is proof of apathy, nothing more.

The Story A mayor of the Runaway Bay City Council uses profanity in a public meeting, and since our mommas told us not to curse, we'll reproduce the quote here.
News worthiness *
The Spin The rest of the council members then voted to wash his mouth out with soap but, in Runaway Bay style,  the proposal died due to an argument over which budget item would be responsible for the purchase of the soap.

The Story In one of the oddest opinion pieces ever printed in the Messenger, Peter Stern of Driftwood, Texas (who has three, count 'em three, post graduate degrees) writes that Texas voters should reject every proposed Texas constitutional amendment on the ballot in November. "In the past, very few proposals to change the Constitution have been approved by . . .  Texas voters."
News worthiness *
The Spin Huh? The vast majority of them always pass. And we were particularly amused at his request to reject proposition 4 which will give Texas judges the authority to deny bail for someone who violates a condition of bail they are currently on - something that judges cannot do now. His reasoning, "There is no need for legislators to tell judges how to handle this situation, since judges have more experience."

The Story In the biggest "shot across the bow" we've seen in a while, "Supporters of Wise County EMS" take out two ads in the Messenger calling for the heads of all the county commissioners at election time.
News worthiness ***
The Spin The commissioners immediately announced they had just been kidding about that Careflite thing.

The Spin Messenger photographer Joe Duty falls down a man hole in a city street.
News worthiness *
The Spin And we have the photographic evidence to prove it.
