A (sometimes) tongue in cheek review of the news published this week regarding Wise County.

For the week ending 11/25/00:
The Story A natural gas line ruptures causing a 60 foot crater to be created in the ground near Balsora.
News worthiness (on a scale of 0 to 5) ****
The Spin Residents were slow to call 911 due to a mistaken belief the blast was associated with an overly aggressive deer hunter.

The Story The City of Decatur fairs poorly in its application to receive a block grant of $225,000. According to Decatur's City Administrator, the committee reviewing the grant application "ranked [us] behind everyone else in Wise County."

The Spin An investigation was launched to determine if the anti-Decatur sentiment has become even more pervasive than initially thought. (Note: see last week's The Spin).

The Story Runaway Bay lowers its marina slip rental fees from $500 to $350 per year. "The charge . . .  was rolled back since the docks are inaccessible because of the extremely low water level at the lake".

The Spin The adjacent parking lot was also converted to hold boats in order to keep up with the incredible demand for dry docked water craft.

The Story Two men, Woodrow "Bubba" Ferguson and Blake Overton Long II,  were  arrested for burglarizing an ATM in Chico.

The Spin (1) What causes a man named "Woodrow" to decide on the use of "Bubba", (2) Long's full name sounds like  he graduated from Harvard, and (3) both men were also charged with the more serious offense of "Failure to Pay $1.50 Service Fee". 

The Story Bridgeport High School hosts its first town hall meeting on the perils of  DWI and underage drinking. Rabble rouser Sunni McCasey fired back, "I have two sisters and I know what they did. Besides, what is the difference in speeding and underage drinking? They are both against the law. Everyone in this room has broken the law sometime".  Source: Bridgeport Index p. 3A
