For the week ending 2/4/06:

The Story As Decatur ISD ponders whether to make the campus open or closed at lunch time, the principal offered up this: "You'll have people saying the kids drive too fast, or they have sex at lunch. Well, closing the campus isn't going to stop any of that. Those are issues that are beyond the school's control."
News worthiness (on a scale of 0 to 5) *
The Spin We think we know what you meant, but if not, that is one crazy lunch time scene going on at Decatur High School.

The Story A jury gives Taz Bewley probation for setting himself on fire near his estranged's wife's house.

The Spin Note to self: Cancel plans to burn self up as Valentine's present to prove my love.

The Spin Speaking of good relationships, the new director of the Domestic Violence Task Force warns of some danger signs to look for: "Your . . .  girlfriend verbally and emotionally abuses you by doing such things as yelling at you, swearing at you, manipulating you, spreading false and degrading rumors about you, and trying to make you feel guilty."

The Spin Huh? I normally call all of that "date night".

The Spin As you pay your property taxes this month, check out the list of school salaries in this week's Messenger and feel the pain of the disparity.
News worthiness **
The Spin Example: Alvord Superintendent - $88,000. Alvord Athletic Director - $65,904. Alvord beginning teacher salary - $26,240 (food stamps not factored in total).

The Spin UIL realignment occurs and, for some unknown reason, Alvord, Boyd, Chico and Paradise (all 2A schools), are split up into two separate districts - a decision that will result in hundreds of miles of travel and hours of inconvenience.
News worthiness ***
The Spin And to think we expect our government to fix school financing.

The Story Ken Hughes, amazingly,  writes a Letter to the Editor expressing his surprise that the new Lowes has a "unisex" bathroom  because "PC reared its ugly head." He writes, "But I wasn't confused, I went to the Men's room. I'm not going to that movie either."
News worthiness Absolutely no stars
The Spin Isn't it disgusting when a mother takes her small son into a "unisex" restroom because he thinks he's "too big" to go into the Ladies Room with her?  What is society coming to?
