For the week ending 11/5/05:

The Story Wise County's child poverty level improves to "just" 13.5%.
News worthiness (on a scale of 0 to 5) ***
The Spin Isn't it amazing in this land of Hummers, ranches, $200 purses, $300 IPods, and magnificent churches that 1 in 10 of child in Wise County lives in poverty?  (By the way, here are some interesting demographics for Wise County).

The Story A Boyd man dies when he crashes his motorcycle when a skunk "got caught in the wheel" which caused him to be ejected some 100 feet.
News worthiness **
The Spin You wouldn't think that was possible. Not possible to get stuck in between the spokes. Not possible to not get sheered in two by the wheel.

The Story Disenchanted taxpayer H.D. Boswell takes out an ad in the Messenger and comes up with this proposal: "If I were the city and had the Civic Center money, I would build a pool, not just any pool, but one half as big as a soccer field and then I would go to Devon and say 'I'll name this Devon Park if you'll sell me enough propane to heat the pool in the winter for $1,' Then I would let all Texas know Decatur has the world's largest heated pool. The cost to swim - a sales receipt from any local merchant."
News worthiness **
The Spin That's so crazy that it's actually a pretty good idea.

The Spin Doug Baldwin of Justin writes a Letter to the Editor that begins "Sheriff David Walker is a disgrace for a law officer."
News worthiness ***
The Spin And you wonder why  people avoid public service like the plague. (And Walker does a great job , by the way).

The Spin The Attorney General issues and opinion that says County Court At Law Judge is owed $268,000 in back pay, but is probably only entitled to around $120,000 if the county raises a statute of limitations defense, and also points out that the county is immune from a lawsuit.
News worthiness ***
The Spin There is nothing more worthless than an Attorney General's opinion. It is always vague and skirts the issue, takes forever to get issued, and is legally non-binding so no one really cares what it says.

The Spin Wise County experiences a record turnout for early voting on the proposed Texas Constitutional amendments.
News worthiness ***
The Spin Those presidential elections are boring, but telling gays to get out of Texas in Christian love is a lot of fun.
